Fiore dei Liberi meets Tactical Wheel: Competitive use of Gioco Largo
The medieval instructional model found in fencing treatises is not always easily understood by modern readers. Masters often committed only a portion of their knowledge to paper, leaving much open to interpretation. Fiore dei Liberi's treatise is a prime example of this. The fencing master presents a vast array of techniques for both: distance combat and close combat, but does not explain how to perform something as straightforward as direct attack. To fill these gaps, we can turn to modern fencing methodology. Combining contemporary methods with the guidance of medieval masters yields fascinating results and helps identify the most effective interpretations. During the workshop, we will focus on fencing at long distance, known in the Italian school as "Gioco Largo." We will examine it through the lens of modern fencing methodology and the tactical wheel. Understanding whether a given action is offensive, defensive, or counter-offensive will be key to applying the treatise's techniques effectively in sparring or competitions.
